NAFC AFL Players
With the Draft coming up and most of the delistings finalised, we thought it would be a great time, to see how our NAFC players are fairing in the AFL. Let's take a look at their situations with their respective AFL Clubs.
Nick Gill - Adelaide
9 Games in 2008. Total: 16
"Gilly", like 2007 was hampered in his 2008 pre season by soft tissue injuries, not playing AFL until Round 13. While he may have started late, his 5 goal game in Round 20, really showed the officials his worth. Fingers crossed he gets through this year's pre season and gets an opportunity to play Round 1. It goes without saying for players on 1 year deals; he will have to build on his solid 2008 to be retained in 2010.
Greg Gallman - Adelaide
After being upgraded from the Rookie list to the Crows senior list this year, Greg was badly hampered with injuries in the first half of the season. He bounced back well in the later part of the season to play some very good games, which convinced the Crows to retain him. A fine athlete, don't be surprised if Greg is used further up the ground in 09. Needs to make his AFL debut in 2009 or at least play a full season of great SANFL footy to keep his spot, knowing Greg's commitment he wont leave any stone unturned to achieve his goal.
Daniel Motlop - Port Adelaide
21 Games in 2008. Total: 97
Daniel had his best AFL season in 2008, kicking 57 goals and being named in the initial All Australian squad. A magician who has just signed a new deal with the Power, expect him to be one of the major factors if Port are to climb back up the AFL ladder.
Marlon Motlop - Port Adelaide
2 Games in 2008. Total: 2
Marlon, like his cousin oozes class, after being plucked from virtually junior football in Darwin last season, Marlon took time to adjust to SANFL football. His SANFL debut was very good, and we would expect him to become a regular member of our league side in 2009. Marlon played some games late for the Power when they had a lot of injuries and their season was "shot", Marlon will now be looking to get some AFL games when their list is strong and competing for finals.
Jason Roe - Brisbane
11 Games in 2008 Total: 42
"Roey" had some major hamstring issues in 2008 which really hampered his season, having said that he still managed 11 games. Under a new coach and in his last year of his contract, lets hope Jason can overcome his injuries a play a full season of AFL football. Used mainly as a Key Defender he has played some very good games over the seasons, let's hope he continues.
Matt Campbell - Kangaroos
22 Games in 2008. Total: 35
Matt, like Daniel Motlop also had his best AFL season to date, 32 goals while playing 22 games is a great effort for a young kid who really just followed his brother to NAFC training in 2006. So well did he perform this year that he represented Australia in the International Rules carnival. Lightning fast, let's hope he continues to get better and better.
Shane Edwards - Richmond
16 Games in 2008. Total: 32
The No 14 Draft pick has now clocked up 32 games in his first two years at the Tigers. Used mainly as a small Forward in 2007, he was pushed up to the Midfield in 08, with some good results, his Round 9 game against Essendon where he picked up 15 touches and kicked 3 goals was his best. Having just re - signed we look forward to his continual improvement.
Michael Wundke - Kangaroos
After being picked up late as a Rookie last season, "Wundks" had a really good year playing as a half forward with North Ballarat; he kicked 45 Goals and was a part of their Premiership side. After missing SA for most of last year, his hard work at the Kangaroos was rewarded with an up-grade to their Senior List. With the retirements/delisting of Thompson, Obst and Brown he has the opportunity to play AFL in 2009.
Jared Rivers - Melbourne
6 Games in 2008, Total: 70
Jared has had a terrible time of late, with injury after injury preventing him playing regular AFL games. A very good player when fit (a former AFL Rising Star), he has only played 9 games in the last two seasons. Melbourne desperately needs him playing, so we hope he can get his body right.
Mark Jamar - Melbourne
14 Games in 2008, Total: 66
Mark now has his opportunity to consolidate his position in Melbourne line up. With the Delisting of Jeff White, the No 1 Ruckman spot is up for grabs. In his last year of his contract, he needs to play well to keep his spot. We wish him well.
Henry White - Bulldogs
Henry struggled to make Williamstown League side in 2008, only playing one game. A lightly framed player, we hope a year in the weights room will allow him to play more VFL League football and push his chances of being upgraded from his Rookie position.
