Don Shaw Retires
 |
Don and Janet Shaw have become part of the fabric at North Adelaide Football over the last 15 years. In his role as Reserve Team Manager he epitomised the dedication of our valued volunteers. Residing at Mylor, Don and Janet would arrive at the Club around 3.30pm on each of the three training days, often staying on till around 8.30pm. If that wasn’t enough they would be in each Friday to pick up the team sheets only to be back by 9.30am on Saturdays for the reserves match, watch the seniors, attend presentations, have dinner and head home.
One of the highlights of all our footy involvements over the years is to meet the likes of Don Shaw and to share the joy of involvement in this great game of ours. With him it is a pleasure to:
* Meet and mix with him
* Tell and listen to yarns about the ‘good old days’
* Pick the footy team for the week, every Team Manager knows who is in and who is out!
* Check how our venues are going - he is our unofficial food critic at Grand North!
For years Donny fronted each week with little hope of on field success for our reserves. They were also the days when Jack Sutter was a familiar face in the grandstands. Then the golden era – finals experience followed by premierships in 2005 & 2006. All of a sudden all those drives up and down from Mylor became a bit shorter!
We at the Club will all miss the warmth of his visits four days a week, when he called just to see if we were doing our jobs. Never missed an office, although he did spend a bit more time with girls! And the eggs – Don, what are we going to do without the weekly delivery of home grown eggs!
Don, ‘Donny’ you are a great footy person. The best type, the type who takes little but gives a lot. The type whose support of our Club is not conditional, but about involvement, belonging and respect. Illness may prevent your physical attendance every week now, but be assured you still belong and are welcome at all times – congratulations and thank you.
PS: Don, someone will have to print this off for you as we know you don’t like the internet!
