SA FOOTBALL COMMISSION STATEMENT
The SA Football Commission today convened a special meeting to consider the League Directors’ recommendation with regard to the proposed merger of the Port Adelaide Magpies Football Club and Port Adelaide Football Club.

In considering this important matter, the Commission took into account Port Adelaide’s (AFL) consolidated losses of $4.5 million over the last two years and a projected budgeted loss of $2.6 million in 2010.

In addition, the Commission is also aware that the long-term forecast of the Port Adelaide Football Club projects a combined possible loss in 2011 and 2012 of $7.7 million.

However, it must be stressed that the Commission and the clubs were given a great deal of confidence by Port Adelaide Football Club’s new strategic plan, which was presented to the meeting last night.

The Commission is also confident in the new hard-working board, management team and administration of the Port Adelaide Football Club to take the club into a position of strength and stability on and off the field in the ensuing years.

The Commission also had to consider the Magpies’ current critical financial position, which includes a $230,000 loss in 2009 and current creditors in excess of $750,000.

With the knowledge of the perilous financial standing of both clubs and the high risk attached to the merger proposal, the Commission takes the view that it would be irresponsible to lead the SANFL into a position that could well have a detrimental impact on the whole of football in South Australia, including the short and long-term viability of the SANFL clubs and AFL sub-licences.

Both clubs made it very clear that they wanted a decision to be made as soon as possible.

In light of all circumstances, the Commission has resolved not to support the merger.
