Some Good Rooster Memories
Listed below are my five best ever Rooster markers of a football with another selection of ten who excited at times with their aerial abilities.
Haven’t included the Great, Ian McKay, Ron Phillips and Owen Martin because I never saw them play.
The best ever... no great surprise here, {Sir} Donald Lindner, and the other four in no particular order, Peter Cloke {no.25}, Grenville Dietrich, Nick Gill {no.25} and Barry Stringer {no.9}. An interesting little anecdote as far as number nine’s marking ability was concerned, when Patto was coaching us, he always used to say to the players in the backline, if you are in trouble kick the ball out long and high to Barry Stringer’s wing. And I have to add that I doubt very much if he was ever outmarked in a one on one contest throughout his career. It was always Patto’s desire when coaching to have two tall wingmen.
The other ten who often caught the eye in the Red and White colours were... Craig Stanbridge, Barry Hearl, Peter Bennett, Dennis Sachse {one of my all-time favourites}, Anthony Antrobus, Rodney Robran, Michael Redden, Mike Patterson {no.25}, Clinton Alleway, Daniel Stewart {no.9} and Bohdan Jaworskyj {no.27}j.
Hope the mention of the above names brings back some happy memories for Rooster fans.
